On Friday, October 3rd, at 10:00 a.m., at the Polytechnic University of Turin, there will be a screening of the movie The Settlement (Egypt-France-Germany-Qatar-Saudi Arabia, 2025) by Egyptian director Mohamed Rashad . Presented in the Perspectives section of the 2025 Berlinale, this movie offers a reflection on mobbing and workplace safety through the story of brothers Hossam and Maro and their entry into the dynamics of the factory where their father died in unclear circumstances. A story that focuses on life in the factory, between tiresome shifts and threatening machinery.

Event followed by a debate with Ivana Veronese (UIL national secretary), Stefano Sacchi (vice-rector of the Polytechnic University of Turin) and Domenico Princigalli (Regional director of INAIL Piemonte). Moderated by Massimiliano Quirico (Safety and Work Association).

Shot in Alexandria, Rashad’s hometown, The Settlement represents the Egyptian director’s fiction debut project. In the light of realist cinema, this is a film that plunges the viewer into the heart of a suburban, working-class and dusty existence, aimed at narrating the story of a family in which a woman and her two sons have been respectively deprived of their husband and father – who died in the steelwork where he worked. An accident, as claimed by management. Behind this façade lies the direct responsibility of those trying to bury the case. As compensation – blackmail to avoid an investigation -, the oldest son, 23-year-old Hossam, is hired to replace his father. Meanwhile, Hossam’s 12-year-old brother Maro insists on accompanying him to work, abandoning school and visiting an environment that is not suitable for him. However, no one bats an eye.

Mohamed Rashad (Alexandria, 1980) studied Movie Direction at Jesuit Cultural Film School of Alexandria. After directing two fiction short films, From Afar and Maxim, in 2016 he directed his first long feature film, the documentary Little Eagles , presented at the Dubai International Film Festival and at the Malmö Film Festival (winning the Best Documentary Award). Alongside Hala Lotfy and other Egyptian filmmakers, he co-founded the production company Hassala Films, aimed at giving visibility to young directors’debut projects. The Settlement premiered at the 2025 Berlinale.
