Latin American cinema

This section, curated in collaboration with the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and Cinetrab, presents a cross-section of the reality of Latin America, where cinema showcases life and serves as a mirror for reflecting on social problems, even in a fantastical way. Latin America is a geographical space where life is full of contrasts. Tradition coexists with modernity, static dimension with ongoing change, extreme poverty and wealth coexist next to each other. Cinema, an instrument of both artistic expression and social narrative, is no stranger to such disparities. On the contrary, it often puts them at the center of the stories it tells – also through the use of a courageous cinematographic language – to represent a world where work is at the absolute center.

In many cases survival is at stake, a challenge that legitimizes the use of every possible means. This means drawing on ancestral knowledge and traditions, but also on a creativity and ingenuity that often graze on the limits of legality or even go beyond it. For this reason, cinema does not limit itself to respond only to creative or intellectual pleasure or to pursue a merely formal aesthetic research through artificial shots or expedients. In many cases, there is an explicit interest to portray the daily life of various social groups, to use movies as an instrument of useful reflection and give visibility, disseminate and make known situations and circumstances that deserve particular attention. The magic of cinema in Latin America can be as natural as life itself, even though it can tell a story that is both personal and collective.
