Calabria. Iolanda, still a child, was entrusted to the family of Silvana’s grandparents so she would serve at their home in exchange of food and lodging. A widespread custom among poor families unable to feed their numerous offspring. But Iolanda wanted more, so she departed to Canada once she became a young woman, where a grown-up Silvana finds her years later. They retrace together her life as an immigrant in search of work and better conditions, but also the desire for freedom and the connection to her roots.

Silvana Costa director, screenwriter, actress and editor, she worked for Suttvuess since 2004, while in 2012 she founded the production company Nacne with Federico Schiavi. Silvana Costa has worked on some documentaries covering different roles. Non sono mai tornata indietro is her debut as a director.
