Zhili is a working-class district not far from Shanghai, China’s richest city. There are hundreds of textile factories that produce eighty percent of children’s clothing for the Chinese market. Every year, many young workers leave their villages to move there. These workers, aged 17 to 20, come from the rural province of Yunnan. Working conditions are unbearable: sleeping above their workplace in unsanitary rooms. Although they live as if they were adults, they are simply young people who just want to make time to be together, laugh, fight for their rights, while looking for a better future.
Created by Wang Bing – one of the sharpest filmmakers not only in China but at international level -, Youth (Spring) represents the first chapter of a trilogy about the world of work in contemporary China.

Wang Bing (Xi’an, 1967), filmmaker, photographer, video artist, is a reference point of documentary cinema at international level, an author who polishes every shot, capturing every single different layer with both precision and truthfulness. An artistic and human path that renews itself from one film to the next. His filmography, in which the observation of the world of work becomes the most salient, started in 2002. With his films, Wang has participated at the most famous International Film Festivals.
