Wednesday 7 October, 10 a.m., Politecnico di Torino, Great Hall, Corso Duca degli Abruzzi, 24
In collaboration with CGIL – CISL – UIL Torino and Politecnico di Torino.
On Wednesday 7 October at 10 a.m. at Politecnico di Torino, Job Film Days, in collaboration with CGIL-CISL-UIL Torino and Politecnico di Torino, presents She by Parsifal Reparato, who returns to the Festival after presenting Nimble Fingers in 2020. This new work once again focuses on working conditions in Vietnam, through a factory in one of the world’s largest electronics industrial parks. Eighty thousand people work there, 80% of them women, subjected to twelve-hour shifts, exploitation and pervasive surveillance. Combining documentary and reconstruction, the film portrays the lives of these women workers through a chorus of images and voices, also conveying their ability to keep looking towards the future with hope.
Welcome remarks by Tania Cerquitelli (Politecnico di Torino). Followed by a discussion with Emma Ferulano (the film’s screenwriter), Francesca Re David (National Secretary, Cgil), Alessandra Colombelli (Politecnico di Torino, Chair of the Equal Opportunities, Wellbeing and Non-Discrimination Committee), Tatiana Mazali (Politecnico di Torino, Interuniversity Department of Regional and Urban Studies and Planning), Silvia Nidasio (Regional Technical Consultancy for Health and Safety, Inail Piemonte).

Northern Vietnam. A huge electronics industrial park, one of the largest in the world, employs 80,000 people. The shifts are 12 hours long. Components are assembled without considering the necessities of who is being exploited, controlled and closely monitored. To describe this situation, Parsifal Reparato chose the path of hybrid cinema. He brought his lens into the homes of working-class women and families, and into the noisy and crowded urban spaces, introducing viewers to women who, despite everything, never lose hope. The result is a choral portrait formed by images and voices delivered into a documentary with studio re-enactments. In an environment used as a film set and just filled with the bare minimum, a group of women re-enact the alienating work routine. It gives the impression of a science-fiction setting, it is the reproduction of an exploitative system which She captures flawlessly.
Parsifal Reparato. Director, anthropologist, journalist and photography director born in Naples in 1985. In 2011 made his debut documentary, Mas allá de la Santería, immediately after a research project on medical anthropology discussing HIV prevention and analyzing therapeutic procedures in the Cuban Santeria. He documented Sumatra’s gold and gemstone prospectors in Rezeki. He has spent years exploring socialist and former socialist countries as they face the pressures of the global economy. Before exploring their lives in She, he had previously focused on female Vietnamese factory workers in Nimble Fingers, presented at Job Film Days 2020.
