Wang Bing

Job Film Days 2025 pays homage to Chinese director Wang Bing, in collaboration with the Turin National Cinema Museum: the author will be the protagonist of a masterclass, followed by the screening of his movie at Cinema Massimo.

Choosing this director born in Xi’an in 1967 as guest of honor means offering a precise viewpoint and perspective indication, while focusing on the reality of China’s world of work through the original point of view of one of the most influential voices of international contemporary cinema.

As photographer and video artist in addition to director, in his movies – both documentary and fiction works – Wang Bing has often tackled themes of labor in a country with rampant exploitation conditions. In order to narrate these worlds bringing them away from the darkness of off-camera dimensions, and to enlighten them on camera, Wang Bing needs his own cinematographic timing to polish every shot, while simultaneously capturing every single different layer with both precision and truthfulness. His movies often last hours, needing expanded times for both processing and viewing to deeply get in touch with the narration of environments and people. An artistic and human path renovating from one movie to the next. It is not casual that he built a labor trilogy both on and in present China, opened by the movie presented at the festival, that is to say Youth (Spring) (2023), and then followed by the two chapters Youth (Hard Times) and Youth (Homecoming), both from 2024.
