Learning with tv – Work

Set design

Wednesday 7 October, 10 a.m., Palazzo della radio-Mediateca Rai, Via Giuseppe Verdi, 31

In collaboration with Rai Teche.

On Wednesday 7 October at 10 a.m., Job Film Days, in collaboration with Rai Teche, organises an educational session primarily aimed at upper-secondary and vocational school students, exploring the work of the set designer.

Maurizio Zecchin, a Rai set designer with thirty years of experience who has designed sets for numerous programmes broadcast on Rai channels and for several television dramas, will explain how a set is conceived and takes shape, from the initial idea through to construction and broadcast.

The session traces the stages of the process: analysing the programme concept or screenplay, working with the director and production team, developing initial sketches, technical design, choosing materials, construction and assembly, and finally adapting the set to filming requirements, lighting and video content.

Examples will illustrate the differences between two fields: in television programmes, set design must create a recognisable visual identity while meeting the needs of the studio, cameras and lighting; in drama, settings help define the story, period and characters’ identities.

The session is led by Maurizio Zecchin (Rai set designer).

Admission: bookings restricted to schools.
